Is Kenny Perry Bad for Golf? E-mail

Kenny Perry is the hottest golfer on the PGA Tour right now and could quit possibly be hurting the game during a time when Tiger Woods is on the mend.  This week Perry will miss the British Open in order to play a PGA event in Milwaukee.  That’s right, not Hawaii, Miami, or the Bahamas’, but Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  It is all part of his master plan to gain enough points to qualify for the Ryder Cup in his home state of Kentucky.  He also skipped the U.S. Open for the same reason(Kenny Perry Wins Memorial, Skipping the US Open).  By playing lesser event, and courses he can have success on, he believes it will give him the best chance to qualify for the Ryder Cup.  This reminds me of the guy at my high school who was the salutatorian, but did not take advanced classes.  Kenny, are you really the best if you don’t beat the best?

Also, the casual golf fan is not interested when Kenny Perry wins one of these tournaments.  This is not Kenny’s fault, but the casual golf fan wants Tiger vs. Phil, or Adam Scott vs. Sergio.  Even in yesterday’s playoff that Kenny won at the John Deere Classic, the other two guys were giddy they played well, even if they did not win.  Casual golf fans are not drawn to players who are just happy to be there, nor are they impressed with the guy who beat them.

As an American golf fan, I want to see our best competing for majors.  Now that Kenny Perry has won three tournaments this year, only Tiger Wood has more wins with four, he is considered one our best, and I feel cheated that he will not play the Open this week.  However, if he sinks a 50 foot putt on the 18th green of Sunday’s Ryder Cup to sill the deal for the Americans, I would like a little Bull’s Eye Barbeque with the crow I will be eating.

I think in the "spirit" of golf, a pro player should aspire to be the best and most of all, to win majors. I'm disappointed in Perry and if I were one of his sponsors or an event he'd promised to play for, I'd release him from his obligations and tell him to go win a major title.

Your view is lock step with the main stream media. Last year when he was making out his schedule, he had no idea TW would become a gimp nor did he know he would win three times. So he made commitments...and he is sticking to them...not sticking it to them! I admire him for that...it shows me he is a man with character. His goal is not to satisfy you and me or to play up to the media's cookie cutter image of today's professional golfer...his goal was to get on the Ryder Cup team and he has accomplished that goal. How many of our goals have we accomplished this year? Your classmate has 'salutatorian' on his resume, which impresses colleges and employers...like our score cards...we don't have to write down how we scored just that we did. smilies/wink.gif
