Last night my boy and I played the front nine. He has been discouraged because he just hadn't been hitting the ball very well. For a 12 year old he's got a nice swing but he's been losing everything to the right or topping it. On my home course, losing any shot to the right means reloading because it has as many hazards as Iraq. I finally told him to set up way closer to the ball since all his shots were off the toe of the club. I had the ball practically on the hozel of the club. When he did that he launched it. For the rest of the round he hit them straight and long. He even hit the par-5 5th hole in four shots, which is pretty good for a kid. I'm glad we figured that out because seeing him so discouraged about golf and not having fun was making me worried. Golf is hard, and I didn't want him to be completely beat up by the game so much that he didn't want to play.
