Golfed with my son last night E-mail

Last night my boy and I played the front nine.  He has been discouraged because he just hadn't been hitting the ball very well.  For a 12 year old he's got a nice swing but he's been losing everything to the right or topping it.  On my home course, losing any shot to the right means reloading because it has as many hazards as Iraq.

I finally told him to set up way closer to the ball since all his shots were off the toe of the club.  I had the ball practically on the hozel of the club.  When he did that he launched it.  For the rest of the round he hit them straight and long.  He even hit the par-5 5th hole in four shots, which is pretty good for a kid.

I'm glad we figured that out because seeing him so discouraged about golf and not having fun was making me worried.  Golf is hard, and I didn't want him to be completely beat up by the game so much that he didn't want to play.

Everytime I topped a ball while playing golf in Phoenix, Andrea's buddies made me do a tequila shot! LOL! Try that next time. But seriously, if someone reminds me to keep my head down, I seem to do better. And my instructor told me that everytime I hit it to the right means that I'm keeping the club face open at impact and not lined up properly and yes, I'm too far away from the ball too! That's great your son enjoys the game as much as you do!! Have fun, take pictures and enjoy the time together.

Well I don't think I can force my 12 year old to have a tequila shot after each topper... haha.

That's a great story Tony and good job! My son just turned seven last Tuesday and is just now interested in hitting the links to play 9 holes and I love every minute of it.

I've golfed thousands of times with my dad and I really cherish those times. I hope my boy feels the same down the road. I give him three to four years until he's out-driving me.

Geez if I had to take a tequila shot every time I topped it I would never make it to the 2nd hole! lol. Actually I hit it to the right more than I top it! Thanks for sharing that story Tony - my godson who is 10 is really getting interested in golf too and he's taking a week long golf camp next week - I can't wait to visit him in July to check out his swing! Oh and he's a lefty too!
