Well it's been a couple of weeks since my last round, which included my first birdie ever, but I've finally got another round of golf coming up this weekend. In fact, I have rounds planned for the next three weekends coming up so I'm pretty excited. This year, my wife and I are expecting a baby due on July 1st so, in an effort to save some money, I've been working on keeping my rounds of golf down to 2 a month or so. May is a slightly longer month, however, so I have 3 planned. However, that hasn't kept me away from the driving range. I've been working on keeping up with a regular schedule where I hit the range at least every two days. On the off days, I work on some strength building and flexibility with a workout plan at my house. As I mentioned in previous blog posts, I've also been concentrating on my short game during my range sessions. I've only been bringing 4 clubs to the range with me each day: a wedge, a short iron, a long iron, and my driver. I switch up exactly which ones they are every couple of days to make sure I don't totally get into a niche with only specific clubs. However, focusing on just 4 clubs each time I go to the range also helps me work on my distance control some. I'll aim for the same target, for example with different clubs to get a feel for how I need to swing in order to adjust slightly for distances and get an idea of just how much I can work each club. This set up seems to be working well as my wedge, short iron and long iron skills have increased dramatically. I can almost certainly hit within 20 yards of any target I've aimed for out to about 150 yards or so now. I've even improved my flop shots significantly enough to feel like I can probably use it on a course when I need to. My driver is still kind of inconsistent but I'm not as worried about that at the moment. I figured out that as long as I am willing to sacrifice some distance on the drive, I can usually drive the ball relatively straight. In my judgement, as long as I can keep my drive in play and get the ball within 150 yards or so of the green, I'll be able to use these new short game skills to work the ball for a decent score. The round coming up this weekend will test that theory. It's not a particularly long course but it will include some regular use of my driver to tee off so I'll get to really see how this gameplan works.
