I got a bag at the Ladies Scottish Open being played over The Carrick golf course at Loch Lomond. A German girl called Katherina Schallenberg playing her rookie year on the Ladies European Tour. This is her second tournament as a professional having finished a creditable 6th at the Spanish Open 2 weeks ago. We had a tough day on Thursday finishing at +8 (79), the x4 putt on our first (10th) did not help our confidence on the greens for the next 17 holes! Being one of the last groups out the greens were pretty cut up with spike marks from the procession of golfers before us but Katherina knuckled down and birdied the following par 5, then gave that away on our 3rd with a penalty drop which ended up a double then proceeded to birdie our 4th (13th). As you can gauge it was a wee bit of a rollercoaster of a round. Today we started at the 1st and had an early 9.00am start which meant the greens would be a bit kinder to us as we hit 37 putts yesterday!. A super sand save on the 1st, then a single putt par on the 3rd gave us tremendous confidence and we played steady only dropping a shot at the 7th on the front nine.
The back nine was good to us with some spectacular shots and also a big slice of luck with a ruling for casual water on the par 5, 15th. The approach to the green was poorly struck and we ended up 'plugged' 3 inches from the face of a steep greenside bunker. But once again Katherina produced a miraculous sand save getting the ball on to the green and holing an 18 foot putt! What a par. The round today of one under (70) leaves us at +7 and we will be playing the final day tomorrow, Saturday as the cut has been confirmed at +9. Looking for a good day on the shores of Loch Lomond with the sun shining?!
