Well after a couple of months shooting rounds in the mid to high 90s (or worse) - I finally figured
out what I was doing wrong. I was trying to stay healthy and hydrated with bottled water and Gatorade on the course. Well today I tried a different approach and had a few cans of my beer of choice - Yuengling Lager. For those people who live in states that don't have Yuengling - I'm sorry - this is good stuff. It was a cloudy, drizzly afternoon out at Jacksonville Beach Golf Club - but that didn't prevent me from having the best round of my life so far. Yes I played the shorter white tees, which are only 6114 yds - but I thought that's where I should be after shooting in the mid to high 90's for a while. We were walking with pull carts and after the front 9 I was at 46 (+10) - and had drank 2 of my Yuenglings. I finished the front 9 with pars on 8 and 9 so that was a good omjen. Well my crappy pull cart finally decided to give up the ghost while walking down the 10th fairway - the right wheel just fell right off and it was not repairable. So I had to put a bullet in her and leave her for the buzzards - good thing I only paid 20 bux for it. So despite carrying my bag for the rest of the round (something I'm not really in shape for) - I shot a 38 on the back 9. Unbelievable! What made it so amusing was the fact that I had my 3rd beer on #10 and the 4th on #15 and frankly I was buzzed. I guess I'm not surprised that I played better loose - it was just surprising that I played so well that way. I was actually 2 under (on the back) by #14, gave 2 back on 15 but managed to go to #18 at even par for the back 9. Unfortunately on 18, a bad fade on my hybrid approach shot left me with a chip over a sand trap and of course I flubbed the chip right into the bunker. So I finished with a double on 18 and an 84 for the round... Best round of my life - I'm not sure if I should be embarassed that it took 4 beers to get me there, but frankly if that's what it takes who am I to question it. My friends actually have a running joke that I need a Yuengling if I'm playing bad since they've seen me play much better after downing a can or 2. Only Yuengling though - other beers just don't seem to do the trick - that's the weird thing. Maybe I can get Yuengling to sponsor me on tour. I could be the 2nd coming of John Daly without the chain-smoking and multiple ex-wives... - Troy
