Whew, it's good to have that out of the way. I just got back from my first
round of 18 holes of the year and it was a doozy. I have to say that it was nowhere near my best game, in fact it was probably one of my worst recorded rounds but it was enjoyable nonetheless. The guys I played with have been friends for many years. We were all in a band together for years but have since all gone our separate ways in life. However, we manage to get together at least once a year to play a bit of golf to help us keep in contact. For most of the other guys, it's pretty much the only golf they play each year so it's more about just enjoying the course and hanging out rather than actually playing serious golf. It's also a great way for me to break in the year with a relaxed game where the scorecard never really counts for much. In fact, today's round was the longest I've ever played simply because we all played pretty badly and we let a lot of other groups play through so they wouldn't be tortured with having to watch people 4 and 5 putt holes or fly the greens multiple times in a row. Overall, we spent 6 and a half hours at the course! I started out the round feeling great. I had a bit of an adrenalin rush going simply because it was the first time I was on a course this year. did pretty well through the front 9, especially considering that my arm is still feeling a bit sore from my injuries. At the turn though, fatigue started to set in. By the 12th hole, my arm was really starting to get sore. I also have a bad habit of raising my hip in my backswing when I get tired or lazy with my swing which usually leads to me hitting the ball fat on my swing. That really didn't help my sore arm feel any better. Lastly, it had simply been awhile since I've walked as much as I normally do during a golf round and it started to wear on me by this point. This led to several blow-up holes where it felt like a hell of a fight just getting to the green. There were several holes in which I hit the ball fat over and over again and just grinded my way to the green. However, by the 17th I picked back up again and my final two holes felt really great. I just barely missed a 5 footer for par on 17 and landed the fringe on the 18th's par three with a beautiful 5-iron shot (which I don't have a history of hitting well with). Closing out with a pair of bogeys may not make a lot of golfers happy but, for me, it was great. It felt like a great round to start the season with and I'm really back in the spirit of golf again. I'm really looking forward to my range practices this week...after a bit of ice on my arm. :)
