Our aim is to provide a comprehensive directory to the world of golf. Our target of 5000 golf related pages seems like a distant dream but at the rate we are going it should start to look feasible soon. Our links to golf courses, golf manufacturers, golf travel companies, golf DVD's, golf books, golf clubs, golf retailers and golf news will run into the tens of thousands. We will miss some, so if you believe that a golf related site is missing, please let us know, and if suitable, we will add it. Also, if there is a golf related topic that you think should be included on Wonkey Donkey Golf, drop us an email.
With retailers like 118 golf and American golf on our books, you cant really go wrong. We have chosen Your Golf Travel, golfmotion and La Manga as our travel partners and we are looking at others as we speak to enhance the golf travel section.
Most of the worlds professional golf tours can be found here. Not just the major tours but also the satellite tours. To enhance this, we are building links to the personal websites of pro golfers.
The first page is dedicated to finding golf courses. Eventually we hope to have lists from every country with a golf course. Because green fees etc change adhoc, rather than give you misleading information, we have provided links directly to the website of the club you are looking for. A great way to search.
Don't miss out on your golfing fix during the winter months, why not visit our dvd and book stores to keep those winter blues away. See the menu on the left. Our Books and DVD's are provided by Amazon, so you can be assured of a fair price, new or second hand. All golf reading is good reading. Books range from autobiography's to How to play golf for beginners.
If you are looking for golf travel, we have partnered with what we believe to be the best in the business. They not only understand the golf travel business, they understand golfers. Visit our golf travel section. See menu on left hand side. when selecting our golf travel partners, we have a criteria that must be met. Price, customer service and knowledge of golf, golfers and most importantly golf travel.
There are more to our retailers than meets the eye. When selecting our retail partners, we have taken a lot more than price point as our overall objective. Price, customer service, delivery - both time and cost and reputation are all factors. We have selected the best!
Always winning that argument in the nineteenth hole or never letting yourself get caught out on the golf course. It's always a good idea to keep reminding yourself of the rules of golf. Visit our "Rules of Golf" page on regular intervals and your knowledge of golf, your enjoyment of your golf game and the whole golfing experience will improve as well as benefiting others. Remember, golf is the only game where we referee ourselves.
With the mind game now coming to the fore as we all realise how important the right mental attitude is, we have teamed up with Gail Smirthwaite - golf confidence coach. Her company, The golf mind Guru (formerly known as Confidence Caddie) is quickly making itself known as the best in the business. Gail counts Alison Nicholas, the Solhiem Cup Captain and winner of the US Open, among her clients. If that is not a recommendation, I don't know what is. And now she is available to us mere mortals, just click onto the "Mind Game" page in our main menu for more information.
For the benefit of our readers, we have linked up with Play Great Golf to use their forum. We feel that by starting yet another forum, no one would benefit. By joining their forum the community will grow quicker and become a good source of information and golfing banter. One of the major benefits at Play Great golf is the "panel of experts" and lets face it, we could all do with their advice. Go to "Forum" on main menu.
ORKA Golf Clubs
Due to the vast amounts that some companies can throw at advertising and sponsoring the big names in golf, we begin to believe that their equipment must be the best. But is this always true?
I came across a small club manufacturer (that's small manufacturer and not small clubs) called Orka Golf, who have what seems to be a perfect business model if you don't have the bank balance to take on the big boys at the advertising game. I would like to stress that in no way is this a "have a go at the big boys" article. I have a lot of respect for a lot of the large companies out there and like many of their products without reservation. However, I feel that you need and want to know when a good thing comes along, after all, we work hard for our money and should investigate fully what is out there before parting with our cash. Most of us don't mind spending if the end result is a better game.
So what is this Orka Golf business model that I mentioned. In reality I can only give an outsiders point of view and from here it is quite simple.
1.Take the best in design and have it manufactured to the highest standards using the appropriate materials. 2. Give your customers a choice of heads/shafts and grips. 3. Sell only via qualified club makers so that all clubs are custom fitted (at no extra cost) and expert advice given.
The end result being, clubs that fit and suit the players game, match their pocket and give the confidence all players seek.
I must admit that I have fallen in love with these clubs and make no excuse for gushing a little when I talk about them. I have avoided talking about technical specifications because you can find out all of that on their website http://www.orkagolf.co.uk/ and also find a club maker near you who stocks the Orka Golf range. What I will tell you is about my own experience. That is, I'm really excited to have come across these clubs and because of their playability and the confidence that they give me, they will be in my bag for the foreseeable future.
Although I am a low handicapper, I've never felt comfortable with blades, so I have opted for the muscle back. Trying out the entire range, all of which were good, I opted for these because of all of the data from the club makers tech toys, The club makers advice (which proved correct on the range) and my own input said that these were the clubs for me. I felt total confidence with them in my hands. The only adjustment for me was an extra layer or two of tape under the grips. They gave me playability when shaping shots. Trajectory was excellent with good distance control and consistency.
I have always noticed that when magazines (I feel sure that some of them are swayed by advertising revenue) review clubs and say (for example) that abc1's were excellent and abc2's were less so when they are almost identical and tested by a 23 handicapper, that if a manufacturer produces consistently good clubs, the model is down to personal preference. I am an example. I found all of the Orka range a top of the line product but my preference was for the clubs that sit in my bag...... With that in mind I would suggest that you try them before buying your next set of clubs.
Putters Bloody Putters
As an equipment junkie my eternal quest is to find the perfect putter. Have I done so? Well maybe for this week, but as usual I keep on the search for perfection. So with this in mind, when visiting the golf show at the NEC I tried, at length, all of the putters that caught my eye and have tried to rationalise my findings.
Can the old flat stick benefit from all of the technology around at the moment? Probably, and most of it is interesting when the manufacturers reps are talking about it, but I find that all this techno gabble becomes a blur a short time later and I forget the very good reason that I have just spent yet another (omitted as my wife reads this site) £xxx on a putter. I especially find it difficult to remember when I have just missed a three footer that my granny could have holed with her eyes shut.
So what do I look for in a putter? The answer is surprisingly simple. Confidence. Unfortunately, whilst the answer to the question is simple enough, the answer to the answer is a little more difficult.
So, what did catch my eye? Both likes and dislikes.
1. Gel Putters reading the bumf, http://www.gelgolf.com/ , I was full of expectation arriving on their stand, seeing that Paul Hurrion had put his name to some of the range. In fairness, not a bad effort but would I buy one? No, sadly not. The finish on the equipment was (in my opinion) poor and given that I have already mentioned that confidence is a key factor for me it just didn't cut it. They say that Yes putters are their nearest rival but forget to mention in which direction. The techno speak is all and well but I would ask Paul Hurrion how many of his tour pupils use a Gel putter. I know that tour players are paid a fortune to play clubs but feel sure that if they were as good as the tin suggests at least a few would take the plunge. Very nice people but a miss none the less.
2. Yes Putters Not a lot that I can add to the "Yes" story. Everybody knows who and what they are, and have always been a favorite with me. The stand at the show was not a disappointment and their putters top notch. Add to that, Harold Swash was on hand to give advice and even did a few stints on the stage that was very informative. Always worth trying a few models of the Yes range when putter shopping. http://www.yesgolf.co.uk/
3. S Blade Putters It's not often that the quirky takes my vote, but this is a range that had me sitting up and begging for more. In particular, the wooden mallet. The idea of a spherical face appears to work and gives a solid confident feel in the hands. You will need to visit their website http://www.sphericalblade.com/ to find out where to try one out, its worth the trouble.
4. New Putter from Pure Strike Golf I have to admit that I'm a little confused about this range and mostly the doubts in my mind are raised by their marketing leaflet and not the putter itself. This sends my confidence in the wrong direction which is a pity because on the face of it, it's not a bad putter, it's like a million others, but it's not bad. To me, confidence in your putter is key. So what turned me off? 1. The fact that in the testimony section JJ of Hertfordshire writes that he had 3 birdies in the first three holes and six single putts in nine holes, still ended at 1 under par so must have had a really bad back nine and all of this from a thirteen handicapper. Are we talking gross or net? If it's net then I'm still not impressed as he was still 12 over. 2. In the independent test section of the leaflet it doesn't actually say that the Bio-engineers found it to be the best against other"premium putters" and ends by saying "In our opinion 98% of golfers will improve their putting performance using a purestrike putter". So that's in their opinion and not the bio-engineers. But you do get a FREE Headcover and FREE delivery. I must stress that I am the first to admit that personal preference is a large part in putting success but for me these are average at best. http://www.purestrikegolf.co.uk/
