Vijay Singh
-G
Jan. 8 - 10:51 pm et
Vijay Singh carded an even-par 73 in the opening round of the Mercedes-Benz Championship.
Singh opened his season with a double-bogey at the 1st hole and was 3-over through four, then settled down to get it back to even par on the day. He hit 15 GIR, which isn't hard at Kapalua's Plantation Course, but he needed a whopping 34 putts to post his number. He didn't show any major discomfort during his round.
Geoff Ogilvy
-G
Jan. 8 - 10:25 pm et
Geoff Ogilvy crafted a bogey-free, 6-under-par 67 in the opening round of the Mercedes-Benz Championship.
The Aussie found 16 GIR and took 29 putts, a terrific ratio anywhere, but particularly on the large, undulating surfaces at Kapalua's Plantation Course. It's already a completely different January, one year after he started very slow while adjusting to the birth of his second child.
Ryuji Imada
-G
Jan. 8 - 9:55 pm et
Ryuji Imada posted a 4-under-par 69 in the opening round of the Mercedes-Benz Championship.
Imada managed just six pars on his round, which included a crowd-pleasing string of seven consecutive birdies (holes 6-12). The streak is one short of the all-time PGA Tour record.
Adam Scott
-G
Jan. 8 - 9:35 pm et
Adam Scott signed for an even-par 73 after his opening round of the Mercedes-Benz Championship.
Scott hit 14 (of 15) fairways and 16 GIR at Kapalua's Plantation Course today, but took 34 putts, which might speak to his extended layoff. In a press conference this week, he admitted that his knee was "90 percent" and that he should have taken more time off earlier in the year. He plans to play in next week's Sony before teeing it up in Qatar the week after, and then not again until the Match Play (February 25).
Davis Love III
-G
Jan. 8 - 8:28 pm et
Davis Love III carded a 4-under-par 69 in the opening round of the Mercedes-Benz Championship.
Love drained six birdies in his first tour of Kapalua's Plantation Course since 2007, validating (at least for one round) his Fall Series fireworks of a few months ago. Afterwards, he told Golf Channel that he will be playing the Sony next week and is planning five starts on the West Coast thereafter.
Ryan Palmer
-G
Jan. 8 - 9:37 am et
Ryan Palmer withdrew from Wednesday's Pro-Am at the Mercedes-Benz Championship.
Rory Sabbatini, who did not qualify for the season-opener, replaced Palmer. According to a source at the event, Rotoworld has learned that Palmer might have aggravated an injury this week, which may play a role in his ability to perform in the 72-hole tournament. We will update you as more news becomes available but weekly leagues should adjust accordingly.
Vijay Singh
-G
Jan. 7 - 9:00 am et
The Honolulu Star-Bulletin has reported that several sources have confirmed that Vijay Singh will have surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his knee.
Singh remains in the field at this week's Mercedes-Benz Championship. Golf Digest also reported that an MRI confirmed the tear, which Singh suffered while winning the Chevron World Challenge a few weeks ago. "More than anything, it's just wear and tear on the meniscus, and it just kind of gave out," Singh told reporters Tuesday at Kapalua Resort's Plantation Course (courtesy San Diego Union-Tribune). "It's something I needed to get done, and I didn't want to put it off." Singh will have the procedure in Jacksonville, Florida on January 14 and plans on returning to action on February 12 at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
