Harrington defends Open title.

Padraig Harrinton has become the first European to successfully win back to back Open titles since the legendary Scottish golfer, and five time Open Champion, James Braid in 1906. He joins an elite group of golfers that include:

Tiger Woods, Tom Watson, Lee Trevino, Arnold Palmer, Peter Thomson, Bobby Locke, Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones, James Braid, Harry Vardon, Jh Taylor, Bob Ferguson, Jamie Anderson, Tom Morris Jnr and of course Tom Morris Snr.

His wonderful 5 wood on the par 5 17th to within 5 feet of the hole was the defining moment of the final round. It effectively doused any hope that the great veteren Greg Norman had of gaining ground on Harrington. It also killed of the last remaining hopes of Ian Poulter who had finished on+7 and was looking to perhaps get into a playoff.

Harrington played as consistently as one could in the treacherous wind conditions over the four days with rounds of 74, 68, 72 and 69. Scanning the other competitors scores it looks to me as though only Ernie Els had two rounds in the 60's and his bid was really scuppered by the 80 on the first day. Els finished equal 5th which is quite astonishing and shows the determination of the man.

Greg Norman. Absolutely incredible. Goodnes I hope I can play like that when I'm 53!!!

And did the Open Championship miss Tiger Woods? No. Did Tiger Woods miss the Open Championship? Yes.

I look forward to seeing these golfers enjoying the Scottish links of Turnberry next year. Some pictures of this fabulous golf course can be viewed on my website if anyone has the inclination: www.caddiegolftours.com

 Cheers, Boynie.

That five wood shot was a little reminiscent of Corey Pavin's four wood shot made at Shinnicock Hills in '95, wouldn't you say?
