Curtis Cup: Great Britain & Ireland v USA

The Curtis Cup is the pinnacle of the ladies amateur golf game. It is a bi-annual event and this year is being held over the Old Course St. Andrews for the first time.

The teams have been practicing since Monday and everyone is just itching for the competition to start proper tomorrow morning, Friday 30th May. It is similar to the Ryder Cup and the mens amateur event the Walker Cup, with the morning rounds being a Foursomes (alternate shots), Fourballs in the afternoon for first two days then eight head to head matches.

This is the purist form of golf...Match Play. Exhausting on the body and the mind.

Originated in 1927 by two sisters Harriet and Margaret Curtis "....to stimulate friendly rivalry among women golfers of many lands". The competition did actuall start until 1932 due to financial implications which the USA won 5 1/2 - 3 1/2 at Wentworth. The USA have been dominant over the years having won 22 to GB&I 6 eith three matches being halved. Since 1984 the results have been more closely contestedwith each side winning four apeice with one match halved.

The line up for Friday has been announced and is :

CURTIS CUP OPENING TIES ON THURSDAY FOURSOMES
GB&I names first

8am Liz Bennett & Jodi Ewart v Stacy Lewis & Alison Walshe.
8.12 Sally Watson & Michele Thomson v Mina Harigae & Jennie Lee.
8.24 Breanne Loucks & Florentyna Parker v Amanda Blumenherst & Tiffany Joh.

FOUR-BALLS
Three ties at 12.45, 1pm and 1.15.

The pairings will be announced at lunch.

I am caddying in the competition and will be looking after Michele Thomson who is out with fellow Scot Sally Watson at 8.12am. Michele won the Scottish Ladies Amateur a couple of weeks ago at Old Moray GC and has been playing solidly during practice and is biting at the bit to get out there!!!

I hope you all follow the matches and may the best team win.

Cheers, Boynie.
