Recap: My Second Round of the Year

Posted by NothingMan in Untagged

NothingMan

So, I left work early again to play some more golf yesterday.  With a few minor exceptions, I feel like I hit the ball very well.  I quit keeping score when I joined a group of 2 other golfers on hole 10, but I do still have the front 9 scorecard.  I had 7 bogeys, 1 par, and 1 double.  As I am a bogey golfer, this is right about where I would expect to be, but I am happy because this was only my second round.

I really had some bad shots in there, but my recoveries were amazing (for me).  Even my double bogey hole was bitter sweet.  I had a duff shot off the tee box that went about 20 yards, leaving me with about 400 yards to the green.  I got way under my 3W and hit the ball maybe 175.  It looked like I was a good 20 yards behind the 200 yard marker, so I blasted away again with my 3W.  This time, I hit it perfect (relatively speaking) and hit the green on the fly, thus causing the ball to bounce and roll about 50 feet past the green, into the woods.  Then I was up and down for a 6.  Terrible Drive, decent 3W, amazing 3W, penalty stroke, great chip, short putt.  Bad score, but it felt great.

Other similar notables:

Hole 1:  Bad drive, excellent approach - bogey
Hole 2:  Decent drive, 220 yard 3W landed in the back of the green, followed by a 3 putt - bogey
Hole 3:  Hit the green.  First putt didn’t make it up the hill, so…  3 putt -bogey
Hole 4:  Approach was way right.  Chip was terrible.  Dropped a 35 footer for par.
Hole 5:  Over the green from the tee.  Bad Chip, 2 putt - bogey
Hole 7:  Good Drive, Approach in the sand, great sand shot, 2 putt for bogey.
Hole 8:  Boomerang Drive, Great 3W, Approach to the right, decent chip, 2 putt for bogey.
Hole 9:  Bad drive, approach on the green, 3 putt.

The only notes I have for the back 9 is that I had a triple bogey and no pars.

Scoring when you are not playing well

Many of us suffer from inconstant play, especially early in the season. My secret to scoring well when I am playing well like a novice, is to play the holes all backwards. I put the pressure on my short game and in my case it is from 60 yards and in. I forget about GIR, staying in the fairway and all aspects of game except for getting it in the hole. My thinking is that I know I am a great chipper a better than average wedge player and average putter. I can count on this part of my game. I use a controlled tee shot , sometimes even my 5 wood if the Big Dog is acting up. That gives me 210 every time. My 23* hybrid is good for 190 , and I have trust in it. Even on par 5's I am confidant I will be within my golden zone of 60 yards. Bogey golf is OK , when my game is off. Everything in my game is centered on my golden zone. I don't have "blow up" holes anymore and can still have a good time and play well even when I am not as sharp as I could be. Find your golden zone and play to it and roll that rock!

Are golf balls overrated?

Taken from my site AtlantaGolfNews.com: Here is my last post about my rounds of golf yesterday. On hole #14 (round #1), I found a new golf ball. Shiny, unscuffed, probably only hit once where it became lost. The "problem" was, it was a Pinnacle. I'm not sure I've ever played a Pinnacle. Anyways, I was playing just poorly enough to decide and try it out. My playing partner gave me a hard time about the Pinnacle (ball snob) as is to be expected. After we both hit pretty good drives, I watched him hit his pro V1. It hit somewhat near the pin but skipped to the back of the green. I then hit my approach with my new Pinnacle. It hit about 10 feet from the pin and stopped - 3 inches from the hole. I went on to have two more solid holes and then another birdie on #18 - all with my new Pinnacle. Are we obsessing and paying too much for the expensive golf balls or was this a fluke thing?
