Typically, I use the ten-finger/baseball grip. Last time I went to the range though, I was playing around a little with my grip, and I actually started more of a hockey-style grip. What I mean by that is that I used the typical ten-finger grip, but I moved my right hand down about an inch or so, so that it was not touching my left hand. Not a big gap, but significant enough that it “felt” a lot different.
When I swung the club, it felt like I had a lot more control, but I could tell I wasn’t hitting the balls as far. However, the bottom line was that I was driving the ball straight as an arrow, I felt like I had control. I think I can actually feel my lower hand come through the ball and release. I feels like my hand forces the club to be square at impact. I tried doing this a little bit with my long irons too, and had the same results. I hit my 4 iron better than I ever had, and they DID go long.
Does this sound ridiculous? Keep in mind, by me calling it a hockey grip doesn't mean I'm holding it like a hockey stick, that was just the first thing I thought of when my hands were detached. Should I act like I never even tried this and walk away before it becomes a big problem, or should I go with it and take it out on the course?
