Hate to be argumentative, but I don't think the clubs make much difference (if you have a fundamentally correct golf swing). The driver head makes a difference, hence my switch from the R-7 to the Cobra, but really not much. I just like the sound, ha.

But I can hit 1960s era heavy steel shaft tiny forged Haig Ultra blades (rusty) about as well as my BB graphite OS cavity back irons. The Haig Ultras feel pretty crappy in comparison to the BB Graphites, but the ball goes about the same. The divot is the same. So the only difference is feel, and that is pretty subjective.

I tell beginners to spend the money on A SERIES of lessons, get a golf swing. Then buy any brand of premium clubs.--used of course. Preferably graphite shafts and OS heads. Pings are good, Taylormade, Callaway, whatever.

As Lee Trevino famously proved 40+ years ago, the clubs make little difference to a hundred shooter (most amateurs). To prove his point, he broke 90 on a championship course with a COKE bottle taped to a stick (they were heavy thick glass then). It wasn't a great putter.

didn't sound arguementative at all...in fact you somewhat echoed my point. i am not shooting hundreds these days, but am quite the amateur just the same. my point was, and you echoed it, i have "those friends" who drop bills on new clubs and add to their bag week after week and it hurts them more than helps. i would love to get a set of taylors, but first i want to hone my stroke and reward myself when i feel i have earned it! good talking to you take care!

Good thinking!!

If you really want to impress your friends, drop bills (actually just one or so) on a series of lessons. Tell the teaching pro you will return as necessary and that you WILL persist through the drills to ingrain the new skills. And find a pro who is himself a tournament player--or has been such. I am not impressed with the "talks a good game" folks who teach but can't play.

When the pro understands you will return and you will do the drills--without reverting back to what is comfortable, he will teach you to play golf! And he will identify with you--because you are telling him you are like he was--and all his friends who shoot scratch or below.

Golf is no different than learning to play guitar or piano--or a foreign language. The student must persist endlessly, do the boring drills endlessly--until the new skill is ingrained. Anyone who has accomplished a musical instrument or a language (or Chemistry or any other rigorous pursuit) knows what it takes--and it is NOT trivial!!

It is just ridiculous to buy expensive clubs and take only a lesson or two, do no drills, and expect to play. That is like buying a grand piano--and skipping music lessons. Forget it. You will just embarrass yourself when you sit down at it.

Them's the facts. The good news is that golf practice, the drills, are actually fun.

I recently began using Weszty Golf Double U irons and installed FST 125 shafts in them.

They are a great looking iron with a thin top line and little offset in a forgiving head.

I suggest them if you are looking for an alternative that will not break the bank!

I have a link and more info on my web site if you are interested.

Normally I'd have to remove that link to abide by forum rules Mike. But since there's a big fat TGS logo on that page I think we can let this one stay.
