When someone deletes their account or spammers get banned, the email system wasn't smart enough to delete their mail. The result was a "You have 'x' private messages" notification, yet clicking it resulted in not finding any messages in the mail box.
I HOPE this is fixed since I just upgraded the mail system. If any of you have had this issue in the past, please check and see if it's working now and let me know either way.
